What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. Music therapy uses music as the main motivational tool to aid in creating positive and successful outcomes, as well as achieving developmental and therapeutic goals.

Therapeutic benefits through Music Therapy participation:

  • Multi-sensory stimulation
  • An outlet for expression
  • Increasing socialization (i.e. turn-taking, greetings)
  • Increasing communication
  • Building positive relationships with peers and staff
  • Improving motor skills
  • Enhancing cognitive skills
  • Music as an enjoyable leisure activity
